Boys Basketball: T-Hawks tumble Benson
Tribune Staff Report
MONTEVIDEO — Brett Bergeson’s five 3-pointers and 26 points helped offset Sam Peterson’s game-high 32 points for Benson as Montevideo won for the sixth time in its last seven games, by edging the Braves 78-71 in a West Central South Conference game Friday.
The win kept the Thunder Hawks unbeaten in the conference at 6-0, a half-game ahead of Morris-Chokio-Alberta.
Bergeson netted 15 points in the first half to help Montevideo stake a 41-25 lead at halftime. But fueled by Peterson, Benson (2-5, 9-6) fought back in the second half and tied it at 68.
Montevideo never relinquished the lead after squandering its sizeable halftime lead by going 13-for-15 at the free throw line in the second half.
Peterson scored 24 points in the second half to help the Braves outscore Montevideo 46-37 in the final 18 minutes of play.
Kyle TeBeest followed Bergeson with 11 points and Colton Vien produced another 10. Jake Douglas added 9 points and 7 rebounds as Montevideo shot 50 percent from the field.
No other Brave scored in double figures as Colin Ose and Logan Connelly each had 9 points. It was the fourth loss in their last five games for the Braves, who were 8-2 in their first 10 games of the season. Peterson added 9 rebounds.
